This year was a historic year for the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL). We became the largest urban debate in the nation by providing life-changing opportunities to 2,000 students and 181 schools through 30 local tournaments, 10 travel tournaments, 36 workshops, 10 debate nights, and 4 teacher development conferences. During this ongoing year, the NYCUDL family is continuously working to provide high-quality debate education to all. One of the blessings of working at the NYCUDL is hearing from parents and students how debate has benefitted their lives. Today, I want to share the story of Seema.
“… [NYCUDL] taught me that my beliefs and my ideas can always have an influential impact upon society. … [debate] has broadened my knowledge on the world and ignited a fire in my soul to continuously fight for what I truly believe in.”
Seema is a 11th grade high school debater. She started in debate last year, and has participated in every high school tournament this year. During her short participation, she has been recognized with 1st Place Top Speaker Award. While she is still new to debate, she has been a remarkable debater since day one. Not only does Seema excel as a debater at tournaments, but she is also an excellent student leader. Seema is one of the many students in which debate has changed lives. Prior to joining the debate team at her school, she had given up on her education with low attendance and failing grades. However, this changed after participating in her first tournament. In her own words,
“I soon started receiving 100’s on every assignment that was given. I’m proud to say that I became a fire that not even firefighters could put out. Through [debate] I became a confident woman and leader.”
Amazing stories like Seema’s remind me why our mission is so critical. Every school should have a debate team and every student should have the best debate education opportunities.
