"The American Dream belongs to all of us." - Kamala Harris
Happy birthday to Senator Kamala Devi Harris! Ms. Harris was born October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. The daughter of immigrants (her mother is from India, her father from Jamaica). She was the first woman and first person of color ever elected as California attorney general in 2001.
As a child, Kamala lived in Berkeley, CA with her parents and younger sister. Her mother (a prominent breast cancer researcher) and her father (an Economics professor at Stanford University) divorced when she was seven. Her mother took custody of the girls and moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Kamala graduated from Montreal's Westmount High School in Quebec and went on to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. There she majored in political science and economics and joined the debate team. She thrived on the debate team and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. It was also there that she had her first taste of politics. Harris earned her law degree at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
Her training served her exceptionally well in one of her more famous debates against Loretta Sanchez. In 2016, while running for the US Senate, Attorney General Kamala Harris debated U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez. The Orange County Register described Harris' debating style as "measured and precise." Ultimately, Harris won the election. Following her victory, she announced her intention of being a strong advocate for immigrants.
Kamala Harris commanded the attention of the nation during the questioning of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the James Comey firing. When Senators John McCain and Richard Burr interrupted her for "prosecutorial-style" questions, they both came under fire for being racist and/or sexist in their reactions to Harris. Ms. Harris later fought back on Twitter reminding the Senators (and the nation), "The women of the United States Senate will not be silenced when seeking the truth."
Because of her sharp intellect and superior communication skills, the mainstream media has touted Senator Kamala Harris as a strong potential candidate for the 2020 Democratic Candidate for the U.S. presidency.
