"[The Bill of Rights is] designed to protect individuals and minorities against the tyranny of the majority, but it's also designed to protect the people against bureaucracy, against the government." - Laurence Tribe

Laurence Henry "Larry" Tribe, born October 10, 1941, will hit 75 this year. Congratulations to Laurence Tribe who has had much to celebrate in his lifetime. Few individuals have become as well-respected as this professor and legal scholar, who has served as Barak Obama's mentor, won the highest honor at Harvard, and once won the highest college level debate title.

Laurence Tribe is a constitutional law professor at the Harvard Law School. He has taught since 1968 and was awarded the title of "University Professor," Harvard's highest academic honor. But Tribe's credentials extend far beyond academics. On top of his university responsibilities, he regularly works as legal counsel for corporations and causes. His treatise "American Constitutional Law" became a well-regarded and regularly cited legal text. In total, Tribe has written 115 books and articles to date.

The man some call the best legal scholar in America began with debate. As a college student, Laurence Tribe participated in Harvard's debate team. In 1961, his team won the intercollegiate National Debate Tournament. In 1969, he coached a team that went on to win the same title.

Today, Tribe is outspoken on matters of constitutional rights. He is committed to exposing injustices, whether they involve individuals, corporations, or the highest levels of government. For Laurence Tribe, debate was the foundation that enabled him to kick-start an incredible career. Debate builds confidence, speaking skills, and the ability to express yourself clearly and persuasively. Consider getting involved with a debate team sooner rather than later!
