Another historical weekend for debate in New York City! At NYC HIgh School Tournament #5 (2/3/18), 37 schools, 204 students, 93 volunteers, teachers and guests participated! And at MSQI Debate Tournament #2, 36 schools, 479 students, 220 judges and volunteers, 243 debate teams. So a grand total of 73 schools and 683 students participated in debates this weekend thanks to over 313 volunteers, staff, teachers and guests! AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Thank you everyone for making this possible. Thank you to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation for sponsoring NYC High School Tournament #5 and thank you to the Middle School Quality Initiative for bringing debate to so many students and schools. And congratulations to the winners of the Coolidge Cup. The top two Varsity Public Forum Debate Teams and Top Two Varsity Speakers will receive full scholarships (travel, housing, meals) for five days to train and compete at the Coolidge Cup in Vermont this Summer! The champions of that tournament will receive $10,000 in scholarships!
So with such a historical weekend, we had break the following weekend... not! NYC Middle School Tournament #5 was the following weekend in two different locations next Saturday (2/10). Over 40 schools and 400 students participating in debates in public forum debate and parliamentary debate. Topics included abolishing the capital gains tax, genetically modified food, merit pay for the best teachers, and ending 24 hour subway service in NYC.
