Our last regular season middle school tournament was the largest middle school tournament hosted in New York State history with hundreds of middle school debaters! Every type of middle school debate was available from Student Congress to Parliamentary Debate. Thank you to the incredible Bronx HS of Science Speech and Debate Team - the largest team in the nation and Director Jon Cruz for hosting and sponsoring the tournament! The day featured three rounds of debate, multiple workshops on a range of topics from High School Admissions to Demo Debates as well as Prep Rooms in the morning for all debaters! It was only fitting that the largest high school speech and debate team in the country hosted the largest middle school debate tournament in New York History. On April 5th the Bronx High School of Science hosted the first Battle of the Boroughs! Over 300 students debated the following topics:
1. This House believes that (THBT) marriage is an outdated institution.
2. THBT the U.S. should end its military aid to Israel.
3. THBT single-gender classrooms would improve the quality of education in American public schools.
PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE
MSQI Topic: Resolve that the use of transfats in foods should be regulated. (Series 3 - Week 19 of Word Gen)
NATIONAL PF TOPIC: THBT single-gender classrooms would improve the quality of education in American public schools.
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic engagement toward Cuba by ending its embargo on Cuba.

BATTLE OF THE BOROUGHS FEATURES AMAZING WORKSHOPS AND DEBATE COACHES ALL DAY!
At each of our middle school debate tournaments we host workshops for all debaters. At the Battle of the Boroughs the following workshops were taught by Bronx HS of Science Debaters: (1) High School Admissions Process and the Specialized HS Examination, (2) Introduction to High School Debate; (3) Policy Debate; (4) Public Forum Debate Skills #1; (5) Public Forum Debate Skills #2; (6) Public Forum Debate Skills #3; (7) Public Forum Demo Debate; and (8) Introduction to Public Forum Debate. Another shout out to Bronx Science debaters for coaching these incredible workshops!
Additionally, for the first time and precedent for tournaments to come we had an incredible staff of high school student coaches to support our middle school teams and so thank you to all our high school debaters for making this happen and the Middle School Quality Initiative and Mr. Ben Honoroff for making this happen!
