Congratulations to #Julio Cordero of the High School of Leadership and Public Service for making the USA Debate Development Team! The USA Debate Team selects the top debaters from across the nation to represent the United States in debate tournaments across the world!
“These students are some of the best debaters across our country,” said Executive Director J. Scott Wunn. “We’re excited to watch them embark on an educational experience of a lifetime!”
Throughout the school year, the team will compete in nearly a dozen competitions across the globe from New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Boston to Germany, Croatia, and Argentina before heading to the World Championships in Bali, Indonesia, in August.
The USA Debate team features a highly accomplished and dedicated coaching staff. These coaches have deep roots in the content and style of World Schools Debate and work with the team to acclimate the debaters to the event.
The mission of USA Debate is to join the global promotion of free and civil discourse, foster international cooperation and education, as well as demonstrate competitive excellence and national pride.Learn more about the USA Debate -https://www.speechanddebate.org/usa-debate/.
Julio has debated with the NYC Urban Debate League since middle school at PS 161. He was coached by legendary NYC Debate Coach, Tyler Beattie. Julio was one of the top middle school debaters in the country. He was accepted to high school at the High School for Leadership and Public Service but the school did not have a debate team. So Julio and his debate partner, Rajendra Singh decided to start a debate team! In high school, Julio continued debate excellence and has won top awards at every local, regional and national tournament including the Harvard University Debate Invitational Tournament.
