Congratulations to high school senior, Julio Cordero of Leadership & Public Service High School for his nomination to the US Presidential Scholars Program.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
Julio has been an incredible debater since middle school and has won every top award in the debate league including placing at the top of nearly every tournament he attends with his partner, Rajendra Singh. Last year Juilo and Rajendra not only qualified to the Tournament of Champions (the most prestigious debate tournament in America) but reached elimination rounds of the Tournament and Top 16. They have done this with no formal debate program at their school! And no debate coach at their school! Which just goes to show their incredible work ethic, drive, and passion for debate.
But trophies and medals are only plastic, Julio as well as Rajendra are both Great Debaters because of pure heart - from volunteering at every middle school tournament, to helping out new debaters, to overcoming every obstacle to debate, to teaching at every summer camp at every year, and for participating in any program to support debate - I cannot say how inspired we are by Julio and Rajendra and so honored to have them in the league.
Finally, we learned last week that Julio was offered a full scholarship to college!!! More on that coming up!! But a huge congratulations!!! And good luck at the next step of the US Presidential Scholars Process.
